in on the consulate attackers. >> reporter: a team of fbi investigators has arrived here in benghazi. they're gogt to now begin sifting through the rebel and ashes at the u.s. consulate to identify any clues or evidence that may help them in identifying who is behind the attack that killed the u.s. ambassador and three other americans. we also understand that the libyan government for their part is cooperating with the u.s. intelligence agencies and other agencies involved in the investigation. the libyan government believes that this was a preplanned attack, that this was not a spontaneous outburst of violence as some have suggested. so far they have four individuals in their custody. they say several more are under surveillance. they are trying to see whether these individuals have any important information that can benefit the american investigation. meanwhile, u.s. intelligence assets including unmanned aerial drones are keeping an eye above the skies of benghazi and eavesdropping on the people below to see if there's any communication that could also shed some light onto tuesday's attack. the

on benghazi. the u.s. and fbi cooperating. there's new video of libyans who apparently tried to rescue ambassador chris stevens but was frustrated because there was no ambulances around or first aid. they took him in a private car. >>> thanks so much. here's a look at other news going on around america today. in dallas, just frightening video here. it shows the moment when two women were struck by a hit and run driver who then drove an embankment to escape. the victims had pulled over on a highway off ramp because of a flat tire. police were responding to that call when the hit and run happened in front of them. the other driver remains on the loose. >>> in georgia, an even more bizarre hit and run. someone plowed into a house in the middle of the night when two people were inside asleep. they didn't know it happened until they woke up and found a chunk of their house completely wiped out. >>> in oregon, rescuers did a perfect job of saving a kitten. it was trapped beneath a basement in that drain pipe. it took firefighters and april plumber six hours to free the little guy. >>> finall

. >> and the president is on the case and sent two u.s. warships to the libyan coast and marines into tripoli and the fbi has opened an investigation into the attack that killed those four americans. contrast that with what mitt romney did today, campaigning in virginia. let's listen to him. >> as we watch the world today, sometimes it seems that we're at the mercy of events instead of shaping events and a strong america is to shape events and a strong america, by the way, depends on a strong military. this president has done something i find very hard to understand. ever since fdr, we've had the capacity to be engaged in two conflicts at once and he's saying, no, we're going to cut that back to only one conflict. >> joe klein, thank you. because you have a big picture look of this. what is mitt romney talking about that is relevant to aur our ability to deal with the group of militants in a place like benghazi that go against the embassy or going against the embassy and ambassadors of the embassy itself in care iro, be egypt. >> once again, the guy doesn't know what he's talking about or he's 25 years o

for possible cuts. you could see fewer fbi agents. you could see, you know, trimmed services for military families on military bases. you might have issues with scientific research that's paid for by the government. fewer food inspectors. fewer air traffic controllers. so it covers the gamut across the government. we cannot talk enough about these effects. because the more it gets talked about the more congress is going to realize that it has to work with the white house to sort this out. >> we're going to switch gears and stay with you ed as we turn to foreign policy, the handling of the middle east. the romney camp was widely criticized this week for the reaction to the incident in libya. give me the overall takeaway on how the governor handled it? >> i think if you talk to republican strategists who track this you'd certainly talk to the obama campaign and they'll say they bungled this. at the end of the week it's still not exactly clear what mitt romney thinks and what he would have done. certainly while he was sitting on this plane flying to florida on that tuesday thiet when this ha
